About OldBlue

Old Blue in the fall of 1963, a group of Columbia University Alumni made the transition from American Football along with couple others that new rugby already, Bill Campbell, Dick Donelli, Pat Moran, Bill Smith, John Wellington, and Paul Zimmerman.  Old Blue started by winning its first 18 matches and has continued that tradition with our 1st team winning 78% of games from 1990 to 2000. The rugby community identifies Old Blue with excellence. Every game played against Old Blue is a championship game. Old Blue may be made up of amateur players, but they strive for professionalism in their game while maintaining the club level community and bond. The Old Blue’s success on the field has made them a staple of American rugby known throughout the world. Old Blue’s players have gone on to found and coach other clubs throughout the country furthering the influence and notoriety of the club.

One of ours

“There is a great poverty of spirit for those of us relegated to the sidelines – ultimately we are to see ourselves in the light of finiteness, rejoicing in those young and privileged ruggers who call themselves Old Blue, men who will bring forth not only victories but also the joy of life – men who know the difference between settling for good or going for excellence! Perhaps we can all say together, “We won the game, we wore the jersey, we did our best, we loved our friends and we played for Old Blue Rugby.”

— Rev. WILLIAM J. WEBER

OLD BLUE RFC - NATIONALLY RENOWNED STANDARD OF CLUB PLAY

The prestigious Old Blue Rugby Football Club offers its athletes the opportunity to compete in meaningful matches at several levels. The club competes in both USA Rugby Division I and II, The Atlantic Cup and American Rugby Premiership. It enjoys this opportunity largely because of the enduring support of the Old Blue Rugby Foundation, created and sustained by the devotion, commitment and generosity of the club’s Founders and old boys (“SuperBlues”). Accordingly, the Old Blue RFC and Foundation carry out their mission to advance and set the standard of club rugby in the US. The Old Blue RFC is a founding member of the elite American Rugby Premiership (ARP) and Atlantic Cup

Old Blue appeared in the first two Super League (precursor to ARP) Finals ever as its inaugural Eastern Conference champions in 1997 and 1998, both years in which it also played in the USARFU Men’s Clubs Finals – the only club ever to reach both elite men’s Finals in consecutive years. They have qualified for the Super League playoffs every year since 2002. In 2002, 2005 and 2006, they again reached the finals in 2008.

Goals and Achievements

The club has participated in multiple levels of rugby in the USA. The club was always a national contender in the days of the Super League.

The club burst on to the 7s seen in the late 1990’s and has been a dominate force ever since, consistently making the national tournament and into the playoff rounds.

15s rugby has survived the years of fluctuation in the USA rugby competition structure. Old Blue always fields a top side in the top level which has gone from Division I to Super League; to what is now the American Rugby Premiership. In these competition Old Blue consistently makes the finals and touts an ever increasing streak of winning seasons.

Bill Campbell

Bill Campbell

Bill was a captain for Columbia University Football team which he eventually went on to coach. He would remain dedicated to Columbia University and Old Blue RFC his entire life despite his life taking an unlikely turn to shape him from sports coach to “Coach of Silcone Valley.” Bill is lived a remarkable life and a career that will likely be written into a bestselling novel, but when asked what his greatest accomplishment was he replied “founding Old Blue RFC.”

The Old Blue Founders (excerpts from Rich Coppo)

John “Duke” Wellington was introduced to rugby in 1959 by classmate Bill Smith, both Columbia College Class of 1957.  Billy, fresh out of the US Army and a writer at the NY Times, had learned of the game from a coworker and he and John began to play this exciting game with the Westchester RFC. These two alumni soon discussed their intention to start a club at their alma mater.

In 1960, John, now at the Columbia University Placement Office and subsequently College Dean of Admissions, interviewed Patrick Moran (CC’63), a young Irish student over from County Mayo , and the subject turned to rugby. They recruited incoming football captain Bill Campbell and these four became the founders of the CURFC.  OBRFC evolved directly in the Fall of 1963 from the great successes of this young Ivy League club in Morningside Heights. John and his three co-founders were joined by famed sportswriter Paul Zimmerman (CC’55) and Dick Donelli (CC’59), both of whom also joined the CURFC, to become the six co-founders.

The Schedule

The Fall fall is the meat of the local season with 2 full sides playing in competitions, with most games ranging from Massachusetts to New Jersey. An occasional trip to seek out some of the country’s best competition is never off the radar, in recent years Old Blue travels to Atlanta to play Life Running Eagles.

The Winter comes to a close around Thanksgiving – Old Blue players take this time to tune up for national team competitions; trying to earn spots with the Olympic Development Academy, Falcons, or Eagles.

The Spring is typical playoff time and time for Old Blue to make a run for finals. If the team is not on a national championship hunt the schedule is filled with the best available teams around: NYAC, Mystic, Rocky Gorge, etc.

The Summer The 7s team plays in USA Rugby Northeast circuit and has made an appearance in the National Championship Competition almost every year they have competed.
